It's all about what their subconscious projects. In none of these cases does it really appear that the town is putting people through a gauntlet of tough love psychotherapy. It's an extension that sort of shows how the town actually works (manifesting the subconscious into reality), but in every other case it was the antagonist, rather than the protagonist (and supporting characters), who is projecting the nightmare. Not exactly a very happy ending you'd expect from a sentient town trying to help people. The canon ending of Silent Hill 2, as far as anyone can tell, is that James kills himself. 2 is the only original Silent Hill game that revolved around the protagonist's emotional issues, and how the experience turns out for him depends entirely on how he reacts to it. After which, Harry can escape and the town presumably returns to normal.ģ had a similar plot (with some very different situations and characters, but it is at its own admission a repeat of the god birthing ritual concept), and 4 also revolved around an occult ritual. For a while you unwittingly help the cult, and complete the game when you finally realize that Alessa is not the bad guy and you help her stop the demon/God. The twisting of the town occurred for the first time in the first game, as a consequence of Alessa's psychic ability interacting with the power of the town, and the presence of the God/demon in her womb (which, again, either is truly a demonic entity or simply another manifestation of the town's power reflecting the cult's beliefs) which gave her "dark dreams". People often forget that the town in the original games is not a therapist trying to solve people's problems.
Are the cult's gods real, or just manifestations of the spiritual power of the town? When the protagonists are trapped in the fog, has the real world been changed by the town's power or are they in another dimension? Different fans will give you very different answers to questions like that. In fact, the fanbase is heavily divided on many of these metaphysical, more implied than confirmed mechanics. The mystery is part of what makes it creepy, rather than just some sort of sci-fi or fantasy with a dark twist. There's not many things the games explicitly reveal about the exact mechanics and cause of what's going on in Silent Hill.
